For the first 75 pounds of my journey, I would walk the track at my local Y and would notice the BodyPump class.  It was a room full of pumping music, and a bunch of people lifting weights with a bar. I knew nothing about it. But what caught my attention was the fact that it looked like a way I could weight lift, without feeling like a total wimp.

Previously I had try to go into the weight lifting section of my gym but I honestly had no clue where to start. I didn’t know what weights to lift and how to do them. All I knew was that I had some seriously toning problems in my arms and stomach, that were becoming more and more noticable the more weight I lost.

So, I posted on my Facebook that I was ready to start classes, and a friend of my suggested I go to BodyPump. I immediately responded “Yes!” as I had been watching from afar for several months.

Body Pump is a cardio and weight lifting class, where you move through different tracks using weights. There is the warm up track, the squat track (ouch), chest, biceps, shoulder tracks, lunge track (DOUBLE OUCH) and ab track.  It is a complete body workout, and the routines are choreographed to go along with fun music.

If you have a friend that does the class – that is great, because being a newbie in Body Pump can be overwhelming. When you come in, you need to get more supplies than the first day of school! You need you bar, your weights, your mat, your step, your arm weights. Arrive early to class and see if a seasoned veteran can help you get all your gear.

The best piece of advice I was given was to start with 2.5 pound weights.  I did this for about 2 weeks. It may not seem like a lot, and you may think in your head that you are much stronger than 2.5 pounds. But, trust me. 2.5 pounds may not seem like much, but when you are doing a total of 1000 reps in the class, its going to feel a lot heavier. So, don’t push it.

I’m not going to lie – Body Pump is hard, and hurts. But its fun, and its a great way to lift weights without having to go into the overwhelming weight lifting area of your gym.

You do a ton of squats and lunges (which will burn like no other), and a ton of different exercises for your arms. When you are done you will be sweaty and sore. But stick with it.  It’s a great workout to add to your regime.

I do Body Pump twice a week. I love how I feel now when I finish and I am finally to the point of adding more weight!
