I have never been a runner.
Let me put it this way…you know those shirts that say that if I’m running it means I’m being chased by something? Yeah that is me.
Well, that WAS me.
When I say I have never been a runner, I mean NEVER. When we ran the mile in school, I always had a stomach cramp. Basketball practice – I would die every time I ran a lap.
I despise running.
Well, I despisED it.
I was at the Y one day doing my normal workout. My goal each day is to hit 10,000 steps. How I hit those steps varies. But normally, I walk about 3 miles on the track or treadmill to get my steps. Walk…not run. Staying in my comfort zone.
My friend messaged me.
“Hey, you are always at the gym, so you need to try to do a Couch to 5K program. I think you’d love it. You can do it on the treadmill and its just an App on your phone.”.
I closed the message box, and laughed at the screen. Yeah right, run. Me…run?
I dismissed the idea quickly. I can’t run.
But like everything has been since I started this journey, the message kept staying with me.
Well, it wouldn’t hurt to check out the App, so I downloaded it on my phone.
The idea of starting a new workout adventure was so intriguing to me. It was almost as if it was a challenge presented to me. I had met a lot of challenges so far, but running was one I hadn’t tried to accomplish.
If you haven’t heard of a Couch to 5K program, it is a program whereby you prepare to run a 5K. It takes 8 weeks to complete. How you prepare is up to you. You can run outside, inside on a track, or a treadmill. It doesn’t matter.
I opened the app and read the first week:
“Week 1: Duration 30 minutes. Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes”.
Didn’t sound so bad. I can survive anything for a minute.
So one Saturday morning I headed to the Y to give it a try. No one was around, so it was the perfect time to give this workout a try. If I failed, none would be the wiser.
The C25K app I use is extremely user friendly. You use it with your own playlist. You start your workout and a voice guides you through.
Start walking….Start running…Start walking….Start running
The voice tells you when you are 1/2 way done and when you should start to cool down. It really could not be any easier.
My first minute of jogging was fantastic. I could actually do it. I could breathe. I wasn’t short of breath. I. WAS. RUNNING.
I watched myself in the reflection of the glass window of the Y. I was seriously doing it.
Each interval I would run I started to feel so empowered. It felt great. Each time I was proving myself wrong. Each time I was stepping further and further out of my comfort zone.
Yes, I took a picture of myself finishing my first run…because even I didn’t believe I was still alive.
And the rest as they say is history.
I am now a runner. I’m slow. I laugh when I look at the treadmills next to me and people are running at 8.2 when I’m only running at 5.5, but I’m running. That’s all that matters.
I’m now on Week 3 of the program. I’m running 3 minute intervals now, and surprisingly (although its hard) I’m doing it.
I commit three days a week to this workout. It’s becoming one of my favorite things to do. It’s truly a challenge for me. Of course each week I finish I’m scared to see what the week ahead will bring, I keep meeting the challenge.
So get out there and download the C25K app on your phone. Before you know it – you, yes you, will be a runner.
