A lot of people ask me how I find the time to workout with my crazy busy kids and tough job.

My answer is simple… I stick to a strict schedule.

It took me over a year to find the perfect schedule for me, my family, and our lifestyle. But I think after some trials and errors I found the right schedule that gives me my time but does not negatively effect theirs.

For me that means I work out every morning.

There was never a greater night owl than me so to do this I had to completely rotate my life. I used to stay up till about 2 am every night. That was just my norm since I was in college. I was never a morning person. So the idea of doing this morning thing was always kind of laughable to me. I didn’t think it was humanly possible to get me up before the sun.

But I tried it and it just clicked. I found that it was easier for me to have my workout done before my kids got up… so I had no excuses to keep me away from the gym. And thus my life changed and my schedule was born.

So here’s my schedule:

I get up at 4:30 am during the work week. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday I first head to Orange Theory and do a one hour class. I finish there at 6 and head to the Y where I walk 2 miles at a slow pace just to finish my steps. I’ve already worked my body so much in OTF that my walk is at a slow pace. 7:00 am is my Cinderella hour so I head home to wake up the kids and we get ready for school and work.

Putting in this time in the morning means that once I’m done I’m done and I don’t have to worry about what happens after work. I can cook for my family, clean my house, finish work, and yes even veg in front of the tv.

Wednesdays I head to a 5:15 am Body Pump class and again walk the two miles.

Weekends change because that’s a busy time for my kids with their activities. But I try to get to a 90 minute OTF either on Saturday or Sunday. The other day is a day off.

And that’s the schedule that works for me both physically and emotionally. I used to work out in the evenings but I found that harder and life would often get in the way.

Working out has become my passion. I work out a lot because I absolutely love it. I seriously do it now more for emotional health than physical. It clears my head, centers me, calms me, and gives me the energy I need to take on my life.

So as we gear up for even more holidays I think it’s more important than ever to establish good lifestyle habits and schedules. Establishing this schedule has been key to my success as I do it so much I don’t even think about it anymore.

Maybe mornings are your key… if they are I expect to see you at 5am OTF! Ha! If not, that’s ok. Maybe a lunch hour, or evenings work better for you. Whatever the time just make the schedule and stick to it.
